Ruler of the ancient sea

Seventy-two million years ago, Mosasaurus, an apex predator up to seventeen metres long, ruled the warm, shallow seas that covered present-day Morocco.

Mosasaurus teeth are often associated with the phosphate region around Khouribga. That regional context does not prove the provenance of an individual piece.

For every specimen, ask for documented provenance, condition and any restoration. Photographs and measurements of the exact fossil are what matter.

What the rock records

Geological context is a starting point

Morocco’s phosphate deposits are widely associated with marine fossils from the Late Cretaceous and early Cenozoic. The Kem Kem beds preserve an older, predominantly terrestrial and river-influenced assemblage.

These regional associations help explain a fossil group, but they do not establish the provenance of an individual tooth. Ask for the record of the exact specimen and inspect its condition, repairs and joins.

First establish whether the photograph shows the product being offered or a representative example. Then compare the measured crown height, condition, any repairs, provenance information, price and terms of sale. No single feature can replace that complete assessment.

How can you identify a real Mosasaurus tooth?

Assess the relationship between form, enamel, wear, fracture surfaces and the transition to any root or matrix. Look for adhesive seams and fill as well. These features provide clues, but one photograph or surface detail can never prove authenticity or identification on its own.

Khouribga identifies a well-known Moroccan phosphate region with fossil-rich Late Cretaceous deposits. That makes it meaningful geological context, but not a complete record for an individual tooth. A stronger record identifies the source, locality, layer and chain of transfer.
