How do you measure a Mosasaurus tooth correctly?
Use a clear, repeatable measurement. Measure crown height in a straight line from base to tip where possible, and state total length separately when root or matrix is present. A scale photograph helps, but does not replace a stated measurement method.
Crown height and total length
The crown is the visible tooth section above its base. A root or matrix can add substantially to total length. Record which part was measured and do not compare crown height with the complete object length.
Straight line or along the curve
A measurement following a curved surface is longer than the straight distance between its endpoints. Use one method for comparison and place a ruler or calliper in the same plane without loading the tip.
Why photographs can distort scale
A wide lens, angled camera or absent reference can exaggerate size. Ask for a frontal scale image with millimetres or centimetres. For category stock, the full size range of the delivered product should be clear.
