What determines the value of a Mosasaurus tooth?
Value reflects size, completeness, condition, preparation, documentation, appearance and recent comparable sales together. A large measurement or species name is not enough. Treat a fossil tooth as a collector object rather than an investment with guaranteed returns.
Compare like with like
Compare the same measurement method, similar crown height, tip condition and restoration level. Matrix or an attached root may make an object appear larger without increasing the original crown size.
Condition and transparency matter
An intact tip, readable enamel and limited reconstruction may be attractive, but appearance remains personal. Clear photographs and honest condition notes reduce uncertainty. A vague claim should not command a premium.
Market prices are snapshots
An asking price is not evidence of a completed sale. Compare several current sellers and what each price includes. Supply, demand and perceptions of rarity change. Buy because the object and its record suit your collection.
