How can you identify a real Mosasaurus tooth?
Assess the relationship between form, enamel, wear, fracture surfaces and the transition to any root or matrix. Look for adhesive seams and fill as well. These features provide clues, but one photograph or surface detail can never prove authenticity or identification on its own.
Examine the whole surface
Compare natural asymmetry, enamel texture, cutting edges, wear and breaks across several sides. One convincing detail is weak evidence when the remainder is hidden. Ask for sharp views of the tip, base and both sides.
Look for transitions and joins
An attached root, composite matrix or filled break may show a seam, different grain or colour change. Restoration does not automatically remove collector value, but it should be explained clearly and reflected in the price.
Treat precise species names carefully
Isolated mosasaur teeth vary and different groups can share similar forms. Scientific work combines multiple shape traits with context. A precise identification therefore needs more support than a trade name alone.
